K-12 and Higher education are facing enormous pressures to change to better meet the needs of modern society. Public schools are in crisis, and with the blaming of teachers for the problems of an obsolete system, enrollment in teacher preparation programs are plummeting. Public schools and colleges of education are on the defensive and reactive to the buffeting policies that seek to focus on the increased assessment of a failed system rather than facilitating the transformational changes necessary for an appropriate system. This paper argues for the need for the systemic change of education and posits that colleges of education should design the new paradigm of education and lead the change of education on both campus and K-12 schools.
