Demographic Change as a Dilemma of Secondary School Managers in Nigeria

Abstract

Nigerian schools are facing an era of alarming reforms. Enrollment into secondary schools has increased in recent times especially in the southern part of the country. This increase is a result of Boko Haram threats in the North and kidnapping and flooding in some parts of the South, causing people to move further south to more secure states and cities. These massive relocations have religious, cultural, and financial implications in the management of schools. Since education is arguably a fundamental right for all children in Nigeria and elsewhere irrespective of culture, religion, and social status, it is pertinent to identify the factors that constitute school managers’ challenges under these conditions and how school managers are equipped for their responsibilities amidst this demographic change. This paper will describe these factors and the challenges they present and will explore solutions to these challenges.
