This panel examines two conundra expressed in our 2015 annual theme statement. The first is the “conundrum of culture, language, and heritage in education, research, theorizing and policy making.” The second finds in educational research the treadle of social justice. Maxims such as these do extraordinary work. They set our sights to a common purpose. At the same time, however, in the measure that we embrace them, we tend to leave them un-examined. The panel treats these conundra as knots to be untied. They offer us an opening whereby we can explore the conceptual histories that have given shape and certainty—and perhaps impossible tasks—to our literatures and professional discourses. The panel aims to show how they do.
