29.063 - Using Public Media to Reach and Teach Underserved Children: The Ready To Learn Initiative

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session will present research findings from three U.S. Department of Education-funded Ready To Learn (RTL) projects that are designing, developing, and deploying highly engaging multimedia learning experiences. The media fosters the early literacy and mathematics skills of low-income children ages 2 – 8 at home and in other informal and formal educational settings. The projects advance knowledge of how digital technologies better prepare underserved and impoverished children to succeed in school through children’s direct engagement with the media and by training parents and teachers to engage effectively with their children around the media. The presentations include a theoretical overview of the role of technology in early education and the learning outcomes of each of four RTL research and evaluation studies.
