Session Type: Symposium
This panel aims to generate a globally-connected understanding of educational reforms that give rise to new market forms, elements and actors around the world. To achieve this, we will first explore and compare the global phenomena of education marketization and privatization in four major urban centers: Detroit, Reykjavík, Vancouver and Zurich. We will then offer a diverse set of conceptual approaches to analyzing how private companies, donors and investors have become major factors in how schools are organized and regulated in different countries. This panel will provide a timely opportunity to compare four cities within the context of their respective countries, and in so doing, will broaden our understanding of how market actors and ‘invisible hands’ might be linked globally.
