Session Type: Symposium
This symposium includes four papers that examine mathematics lessons at elementary, middle, and high school levels from the urban schools in China and US. It analyzes the similarities and differences in the lesson content representation and pedagogical move and how the tradition and reform of mathematics teaching shape their representations and pedagogical moves in the two countries. Drawing on its analysis, the symposium discusses the kinds of mathematics that students at different grade level can learn in these lessons consequently and its contributions to the knowledge about the quality mathematics teaching and its influences on student learning and raises questions about the assumptions underlying mathematics teaching reforms in both countries.
