Session Type: Symposium
Despite the fact that everyday educational activity is critically shaped through material elements, materiality has been largely underestimated within educational research. For a long time, research in education has retained a traditionally human-centered focus in which educational practices were conceptualized as being essentially social. This symposium wants to shift away from human-centered and social assumptions by focusing on how materiality equally matters in understanding educational (inter)actions. By bringing together scholars from various theoretical and methodological traditions who acknowledge a sensitivity to the material features of educational practices, this symposium aims to contribute to a more refined understanding of the insights that may be yielded and the challenges that may be encountered when drawing attention to the role of “materiality”.
