Session Type: Symposium
Since the 1990s, Latino migration patterns within the U.S. have changed and newcomers have moved into geographic regions that have not been home to Latinos in the past, described as the New Latino Diaspora (NLD). We examine how Latino residents in one NLD town called Marshall experience this dramatic change, navigate the varied geographies of social production, and develop, interpret and contest social identities. Specifically, this symposium examines the heterogeneous means by which Latino residents in Marshall engage in negotiations of meaning and representation within third spaces. We argue that in third spaces, adults and youth, through contestation of boundaries and narratives and critical reflection and resistance, can imagine and vie for social justice and engage in resilient action.
