Session Type: Symposium
The 2015 AERA call for proposals asks “Is justice a compelling interest in education research, theorizing, and policy-making?” Those involved in this proposed symposium answer a resounding “Yes.” Bringing together a diverse group of scholars, practitioners, and students, this session highlights community-engaged research efforts in rural and urban contexts focused on disenfranchised communities from the South, Midwest, and Western US. Such work both contributes to scholarly knowledge production in an emerging methodological realm and the advancement of equitable education for disenfranchised groups. Attending to the cultural politics of this work in both academic and social contexts, we draw on specific studies to argue the need for greater engagement toward justice that attends specifically to the authentic participation of heritage communities.
