Session Type: Symposium
This symposium highlights emerging research on the assessment of young dual language learners (DLLs) and the quality of the classrooms in which they are enrolled. Paper 1 highlights the reliability and validity challenges that can arise when using DLL assessment data to inform teachers’ practice and early education programming decisions. Paper 2 shares emerging research on using translanguaging during the assessment process to gain a better understanding of kindergarten DLL’s language proficiency. Paper 3 focuses on Head Start assessment regulations and a case study of practices in three Head Start grantees. Paper 4 addresses validity concerns when assessing the quality of early education classrooms that serve DLLs. The session includes comments on each paper from our expert discussant.
