Session Type: Symposium
How teachers interpret and adapt curriculum materials directly impacts learning; unproblematized generic use of materials can impede learning, even when materials have been proven effective in other contexts. Many efforts to disseminate promising pedagogical innovations have been thwarted when local adaptation failed to capture the essential features of the original design. Thus, what is essential is the principled and constrained adaptation of curriculum materials. Adaptation has generally not been considered integral to teaching practice. Formalizing curricular adaptation and identifying principles of adaptation can pave the way to incorporating curricular adaptation in teacher education. This session presents studies of teacher curricular adaptation across disciplines. It aims to advance formalizing principles of curricular adaptation, and to inform teacher education.
