A common dilemma within social justice movements is for those in power to co-opt or take over elements of a cause to benefit themselves, once again pushing those disenfranchised by the status quo to the margins - even within a movement they have created. Higher education as a key site of social construction and the presumed development of a democratic and critical citizenry is a battleground of co-option and resistance (Giroux, 2010). This panel will look at how the themes and priorities of higher education institutions are co-opted by white, U.S. American, heteronormative, patriarchal, and corporate agendas. And, how this co-option ignores, silences, and oppresses marginalized groups, and attempts to render social justice movements within the ivory tower moot.
