Abstract

Across the world, migration and globalization is impacting the preparation of teachers as increasing numbers of second language learners are arriving in schools and being taught by mainstream content teachers lacking the necessary preparation to meaningfully support their academic content and language development (Lucas, 2011; Leung, 2005; Ohm 2010). Despite the sociopolitical context of language acquisition and immigration being different within each national context, there is a great deal to learn from examining the approaches and research occurring across varying international contexts as it relates to improving the preparation of content teachers working with second language learners, particularly as a commitment to social justice and equity.
