Session Type: Roundtable Session
The session explores the status of language and semiosis within ‘new materialist’ thought, and identifies implications for ‘post-qualitative’ methodology. While the material turn has already had important impact upon qualitative research practices, the presenters contend that significant work remains to be done on the question of language within materialist methodologies. The papers work for research practices capable of engaging the materiality of language itself – its affective force and its entanglements in bodies, matter and culture. This is an ethical imperative, germane to the theme of the 2015 Meeting: without better understandings of how language, matter and culture ‘intra-act’, questions of justice are inevitably badly framed.
