The adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) by 45 states presents an opportunity to study teachers’ perceptions and uses of curriculum materials in a new curriculum, assessment, and policy context. In this set of studies, framed by the distinction between official and operational curriculum (Remillard & Heck, 2014), we draw on data from 85 middle school teachers to explore the interactions among teachers’ perceptions of CCSSM, teachers’ perceptions of their curriculum materials, and teachers’ planning, instructional, and assessment practices. We draw on multiple data sources, including classroom observations, background interviews, and Staged Lesson Planning interviews, to provide findings relevant to mathematics education researchers, teacher educators, curriculum and assessment designers, and policymakers.
