35.051 - Mobilization of Knowledge and Boundary Crossing in a Bilingual Teacher Education Program

Abstract

A main concern in the field of multilingual education is how to better prepare teacher candidates to address the challenges of teaching in ethnolinguistically diverse classrooms. Using principles from Expansive Learning theory (Engeström, 2001), this symposium focuses on the learning of bilingual children, bilingual teacher candidates, and teacher educators as horizontal movement. Our objective is to highlight the importance and challenges of creating learning and research contexts where the mobilization of knowledge and disciplinary boundary crossing generate renewed opportunities for addressing the learning of bilinguals. With the pressure of new assessments for evaluating teacher education programs and teacher candidates, this symposium shows how learning can be better understood when horizontal knowledge across complex activity systems is documented.
