49.076 - Teacher Education and Black Communities: Implications for Access, Equity, and Achievement

Abstract

This symposium will provide an in-depth analysis of the educational issues of African American K-12 students in urban settings and how school professionals and other stakeholders as well as schools of education that prepare urban educators can work to promote academic achievement. The symposium shares insight on the issue of increasing the number of Black teachers as approach toward improved academic outcomes for Black students (Perry, Steele & Hilliard, 2003). More specifically, this symposium will provide cutting-edge research (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method designs) to aid educational practitioners and other stakeholders in improving the academic achievement of African American students in urban educational settings.
