Session Type: Roundtable Session
This timely symposium addresses the political and policy discussions about sexual violence currently occurring across higher education institutions as well as in some of our nation’s highest federal offices. Specifically, we attend to the challenges that higher education institutions face when attempting to implement effective policy and practices regarding sexual violence prevention and response. Panelists will offer research that examines (1) issues of institutional prestige, politics, and reputation; (2) the reductionist and limiting powers of policy; (3) how sexual violence is framed discursively within higher education policy; and (4) heterosexist assumptions about who can and cannot experience sexual violence in higher education. All of these factors impact prevention and response policy development as well as institutional action.
