Session Type: Symposium
Adolescence is a crucial period during which education and social/civic development become intertwined; we have a responsibility to encourage this alliance by understanding how students respond to and engage in educational programs. This session expands on traditional approaches to this task by examining the student experience of an innovative curriculum designed to promote student engagement and development as citizens, in addition to literacy skills. Use of student surveys or writing as a lens on the value of curricular materials is so far unorthodox; this session is comprised of six papers representing diverse analytical angles to highlight these greatly underutilized sources of information. Contributions can inform the evolving conversation on conceptualizing and supporting the experiences and perspectives of all students.
