Session Type: Symposium
This symposium shares a comprehensive mixed method study of diversity, opportunity, and exemplary school practices for Black and Latino males in the Boston Public Schools (BPS). A collaboration among the school district and two reform support organizations, the research goals were to elucidate the diversity within the racial/ethnic categories of Black and Latino, to uncover opportunity gaps in access to rigorous curricula, to identify stories of success in schools doing exceptionally well by Black and Latino males, while controlling for the schools’ composition, and to glean implications for policy-makers, educations, and the community about best practice for Black and Latino males. Crosscutting themes and specific recommendations for the district and community close the session, followed by discussion among audience members.
