65.043 - Bilingual and Multilingual Education: Current Practices and Future Prospects for Promoting Justice, Culture, Language, and Heritage in Education

Abstract

The objectives of this session are to (1) Discuss theoretical foundations and present bilingual/multilingual education as a current cutting-edge field; (2) Provide a broad overview of the development and current status of the field; (3) Provide vivid critical examples of policy and practice; and (4) Move the field forward by rethinking older constructs and introducing fresh ideas that better address the reality of our multilingual, multicultural, and increasingly globalized country and world. The 5 papers in this symposium are authored by scholars whose research and theoretical arguments are helping reshape the field. Papers address language policy, culture, translanguaging, assessment, ideologies, and the implementation of bilingual/multilingual education programs aimed at addressing issues of justice, culture, language, and heritage in education.
