49.034 - Student Heterogeneity in the Classroom: Precursors and Links to Outcomes

Abstract
Classrooms are diverse environments, containing not only students who are dissimilar from each other but also teachers who neither treat nor instruct all students in the same way. Drawing on a conceptually rich, but relatively small tradition of research on the importance and consequences of differences within classrooms, the papers in this session examine within-classroom heterogeneity in students’ reports of their own attention and participatory behaviors (Paper 1), their classroom’s instructional, emotional, and motivational climate (Paper 2), and classroom ethnic composition (Paper 3). The implications of these different sources of within-classroom heterogeneity for evaluating the effectiveness of classroom contexts are considered in this session.
