Session Type: Symposium
The critical literacy movement has afforded a range of approaches to work toward social justice in literacy education. However, the uptake of critical literacies has often been limited in teacher education. This session showcases the work of leading literacy scholars whose literacy and writing methods courses illustrate key possibilities, limits, and tensions related to critical literacies in teacher education. The presentations span five critical literacy frameworks that may be generative for teacher education praxis: critical sociocultural theory, critical participatory literacies, critical performance pedagogies, pedagogies of testimony and critical witness, and a critical resource orientation. The session aims to expand the theoretical and pedagogical horizons of literacy teacher education through scholarly approaches to critical literacies, social justice, and methods course pedagogy.
