Session Type: Symposium
Recently, the United States Supreme Court has issued opinions with potentially profound educational implications for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and families. Yet, because neither case was about education, the impact P-20 requires exploration.
The overall objective is an interactive session focused on these three overlapping dimensions:
(1) exploring the impact for parents, students, and P-20 institutions of state and federal laws and court cases recognizing same sex marriage and marriage equality;
(2) analyzing religious exemptions to LGBT antidiscrimination protections in light of the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court opinion; and
(3) identifying policies and practices to treat LGBT students with dignity and remedy discrimination.
