Session Type: Symposium
Critical theory has provided powerful tools in the struggle for social justice in education. Educational scholars have drawn upon critical theory to illuminate education’s role in (re)producing class inequities (see Apple, Au, & Gandin, 2011). Critical Race Theory and Ethnic Studies scholarship have facilitated more critical analyses of race and ethnicity in education (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001; Goldberg & Solomos, 2002; Ladson-Billings & Tate IV, 1995). Yet there still remains a need for more critical, interdisciplinary theoretical approaches to understanding the operation of race and ethnicity in education. Presenters for this session will offer insights from critical theory to discuss analyses of race and ethnicity in various educational contexts to stimulate new approaches to working toward racial justice.
