Abstract
This symposium focuses on the development, implementation and utilization of a statewide kindergarten readiness assessment by the Illinois State Board of Education. The Kindergarten Individual Assessment Survey (KIDS) is a developmentally appropriate, authentic observation assessment, aligned with the Common Core and IL State Learning Standards. Presentations in this symposium describe the State’s process for determining the purpose of the assessment; defining readiness; selecting and customizing a pre-existing instrument; ensuring that the assessment is appropriate for dual-language learners; and using teacher input and research-based child developmental literature to inform policy.
