60.015 - We Women Speak: Reflections on My First Year in Academia

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Chicago E

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

The transition from graduate student to doctorate carrying employee is a dynamic, multifaceted process, a process accentuated by one’s womanness. Finding one’s footing in a new environment, with new peers, title and responsibilities can be full of expected and unanticipated challenges and rewards. This session features a panel of women each wrapping up their first year in a variety of academic positions. Keeping in mind that “there are too many lessons in the world to learn them all on your own,” the panelists will share with the audience their reflections about the highs and lows of the past year, and will respond to questions about their experiences. Graduate students and newly minted faculty members especially encouraged to attend.
