Abstract

At times, it can be challenging to capture the complex systems that impact students’ learning. Dynamic Systems Theory (DST) presents a promising, albeit challenging, tool for studying research topics in learning and instruction. In this New Directions session, Drs. Avi Kaplan and Joanna Garner will discuss their strategies for applying DST to diverse topics in learning and instruction. Specifically, Avi Kaplan will discuss his DST-based research on motivation and identity development. Joanna Garner will then present her research in designing and evaluating teacher professional development programs, informed by DST. The session will include ample time for discussion on the rewards and challenges of DST research.
