Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
This session is designed to support new scholars who are queer, take up queer positions or are queerly positioned through their scholarly and social identities. We invite all scholars to contemplate the implications of Othered positionalities addressed by the Queer Studies and Disability Studies SIGs. Topics of discussion include: 1) positioning of queer subjects, issues and perspectives in developing a research agenda; 2) when and how to serve as an advocate around sexuality, gender, and dis/ability; 3) balancing and/or blending activism and scholarship; 4) the political and social decisions surrounding identity disclosure; 5) how theoretical affiliations shape access to academic spaces; and 6) intersectional identities and the use of identity to maneuver in and around the academy.
