How neoliberal accountability policies have intensified a focus on school leadership, learning results, and curriculum standards varies internationally. These developments ask for renewed approaches to policy as curriculum making and leadership as enacted practice. This symposium a) develops a new international dialogue between the two significant but yet disparate fields e.g. curriculum theory/didaktik and educational leadership studies, by bringing together representatives covering approaches to these fields, especially the Nordic countries/EU and USA, and, finally, b) advances new theoretical developments making use of Bildung and continental, non-affirmative general education theory as well as discursive institutionalism (DI), social philosophy (eg recognition and intersubjectivity), allowing for a coherent theoretical position on cultural, policy, organizational and professional identity dimensions across and within levels.
