A Scholarship Focus to School-Based Teacher Education: Working With Diverse Student Communities

Abstract

This presentation endorses the AERA 2016 theme that research can strengthen public education. The research study reported promotes the role of education researchers as public scholars contributing to greater understanding of professional practice in increasingly diverse student communities. A pilot study illustrates how one UK teacher education school/university partnership researches and enhances the teaching and learning process in both institutional settings. Thirteen pre-service teachers undertook classroom research during their school practicum (each observing and interviewing three different teachers with the same class). Combining university-led research training for pre-service teachers (and in future teachers) with research during school field experiences proved a significant learning event. Findings were shared via video conference with pre-service teachers in the USA.
