In this research we examined the way in which children conceptualize large-scale space on paper or through technology. Students were asked to construct maps of their school on either paper or an iPad that could guide a peer to a missing school mascot. More students chose to use paper rather than the iPad suggesting that many students did not conceptualize the digital medium as representing infinite space. Those students that did create maps on their iPad were predominately males. While males chose the technology option more they were much more restricted in their digital drawings to their immediate visual range. Children’s perceptions of space were not enhanced through technology and this may be a missed opportunity for learning.
