Investigating Grit as a Noncognitive Predictor of College Success

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Most college and universities seek to utilize non-cognitive predictors of college success in the admissions process. Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is one contemporary non-cognitive factor under investigation. In this study, both self-reported and informant-reported grit explained significant variance in first-year GPA above and beyond standardized test scores and high school grades. Grit demonstrated mixed results with additional educational outcomes and the nuances of the grit sub scales reveal conceptual differentiation. Implications of the utility of grit as a predictor of college success and future research considerations are provided.
