Professional Conceptions About Working With Students in Higher Education

Sat, April 9, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 16

Abstract

The activities entailed in teaching require faculty to cooperate with and maintain formal and informal relations with students. The research examines the professional conceptions of teacher educators with respect to the roles they must fill in their work with students. This issue is important because the conceptions formulated by faculty in higher education guide their professional practice and affect their everyday conduct. Three conceptions can be identified: (1) The role of the teacher educator is to help and assist students to succeed in their studies. (2) The role of the teacher educator is to empower students and help them grow. (3) The role of the teacher educator is to serve as a mediator for students between teaching theories and practices
