Gamers Are More Digitally Adept? Video Games and Educating Students in the Digital Information Age

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

It has been reasoned that video game players could develop a technological disposition from game play, creating an advantage in different areas of growth, to include the development of skills to overcome obstacles. A study (N = 1,258) is presented which examined such a disposition in the context of information and communication technology (ICT). Findings revealed that players used ICT more frequently, adding credibility to the idea that gamers may be more digitally adept than nonplayers. Findings also revealed that players portrayed traditional gamer characteristics. The purpose behind this presentation is to open a dialogue among educators, practitioners, researchers, and policy-makers about the challenges of educating today’s students in the digital information age, and the role video games may play.
