A Jihad on Islamophobia: The Curricular Experiences of Seven Teachers

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

In the current sociopolitical climate, “most Americans say
they know little about the
Muslim religion” (Pew Research Center, 2010). Yet, many teachers are charged with teaching about Islam in Social Studies classrooms. This qualitative case study investigated the experiences of seven high school Social Studies teachers with curriculum on Islam. Analyzing interview and questionnaire data for each teacher revealed that the teachers utilized the classroom curriculum on Islam as a means to counter Islamophobic precepts.
