Case-based instruction has proven to be an effective instructional strategy to provide students with authentic complex situations in their fields in order to foster problem analysis and reflection on potential solutions. The present study explored the effectiveness of small group analysis and case presentations in instructional design before whole group’s discussions in an online learning environment. Data from the evaluation of small group presentations and from course evaluations showed the pedagogical relevance of this instructional activity for the students.
