Critical to any in-depth understanding of John Dewey is recognition that the early twentieth century marked a transformational period in his views about war and peace. This paper focused on the specific context of Dewey as a peace educator, his democratic philosophies, and his concept of building appreciation for diverse cultures. Dewey’s less known social and political ideas are the framework for his role in the peace movement and his thoughts related to global events. The research examined how closely Dewey’s activities coincided with the rise of the “modern” American peace movement and analyzed Dewey’s view on the role of education in a globalizing world.
