Leadership Practices in Charter Schools

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section A

Abstract

The rationale for a study of principal practice begins with the notion that effective principals are critical for school success. Principal leadership has been shown to influence both school environment and classroom teaching practices. Charter schools are under tremendous pressure to demonstrate higher levels of student achievement than traditional public schools in order to garner legitimacy, compete for students, and satisfy accountability requirements The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study is to identify which leadership practices are most associated with improved student outcomes within charter schools and compare those practices with less effective peers.
