Building Understandings to Support Global Language Education: An Analysis of English Education in Southeast Asia

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

With the growth of English as a lingua franca, improving English language is at the forefront of policy initiatives in Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In their efforts to improve language education, countries with persistently poor English proficiency look to native-English-speaking countries, including the U.S., for support in developing school language programs and policies. To partner effectively with ASEAN counterparts, U.S. educators need a nuanced understanding of countries’ context and policy initiatives. This analysis compares English education policies in three ASEAN nations: Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Based on their first-hand experience working in Ministries of each of these countries, the authors describe each country’s historical context, education policies, and current initiatives. The discussion highlights common trends and provides recommendations for action.
