This conceptual paper examines the often implicit theoretical constructs that guide policy and positions on teacher leadership. In examining operational definitions of teacher leadership and the assumptions that drive those definitions, this paper aims to facilitate conversation and understanding across structural and theoretical boundaries. We trace informal and formal theories of teacher leadership en route to suggesting a new “form-ula” for teacher leadership roles. In so doing, our aim is to bring clarity, purpose, and direction to an ongoing and timely debate, as well as identify promising emergent and future spaces for teacher leadership.
