Whose Hong Kong? Cellphilming and Civic Engagement With Ethnic-Minority Youth in the Wake of Occupy Central

Abstract

This paper describes a participatory arts-based study on Hong Kong’s ethnic minority young people and their sense of citizenship in the wake of the Umbrella Revolution. By incorporating ethnographic and participatory visual research (cellphilms), the paper explores eleven ethnic minority young people’s participation in and reaction to the Umbrella Revolution. The paper expands on how participants’ sense of self and civic engagement are negotiated and represented in these cellphilms and in the management of a participatory digital archive on YouTube. Findings from the research show that the Umbrella Revolution has inspired these ethnic minority young people to situate themselves politically, and articulate a longing for an increased sense of belonging in the city.
