Examining Intersectionalities and Masculinities Among Male Faculty of Color on the Tenure Track

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of 22 male assistant professors of color as they navigated the tenure-track while working in various disciplines at four-year institutions nationwide. The study focused on examining how notions of intersectionality and masculinity emerged in the experiences of the participants. Findings revealed three overarching themes related to how the male faculty navigated family and fatherhood, reconceptualized perceptions of self and “others," and how their experiences in the professoriate compared to their faculty of color and white counterparts.
