Scientists as Mentors: Scientists' Views of Mentoring in an Undergraduate and Teacher Research Program

Sat, April 9, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section A

Abstract

Few studies have examined how mentors view mentoring or their own role within the process. Dawson recently created a conceptual framework to address the varying definitions of mentoring (2014). He raises a legitimate concern: if we cannot adequately define mentoring, then we cannot accurately know the outcome of mentoring or replicate those effects. We chose to test this framework as a guide to study two mentoring programs at a National Lab Facility. Specifically we want to study how mentors (scientists at the lab) view their roles. The framework was helpful in allowing us to determine if programs were similar enough to be comparable, but the framework was limited in helping us understand how mentoring was occurring.
