In countries with large testing cultures, students take multiple high-stakes tests starting from elementary school, while their teachers typically expose their students to various test-taking strategies (TTS). However, such instruction cannot necessarily generalize to students in other countries where this testing culture does not exist. When overlooked though, the lack or the use of TTS could add increased variance to student’s test scores. This variance becomes even more pronounced when the test are administered to students of varied backgrounds, as in the cases of international studies (e.g.TIMSS). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the self-reported TTS used by students from a low testing culture, and whether the participation and preparation for TIMSS-2015 has differentiated their use of TTS.
