School leaders have the task to provide support to teachers (e.g. in the form of advice) and to hold their teachers accountable for their classroom practice. This study investigates the advice and accountability network of teachers with the leadership team in their school. Through social network and multilevel regression analyses the advice and accountability network of 886 teachers in 29 secondary schools in Flanders, Belgium is uncovered. We also investigate the influence of these networks for teachers’ organizational commitment and organizational citizenship behaviour. Our study demonstrates the importance of both advice and accountability in secondary schools and shows that mainly the principal is a key figure for advice and accountability.
