A Case Study of Midwestern Teacher Candidate Placements in Rural South Africa

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Five teacher candidates from a regional, Midwest institution of higher education were placed at a school in rural South Africa. Researchers examined both the content and pedagogical preparation levels and the cultural adaptation factors that impacted the student teaching experiences. Through thematic analyses of journals, field notes, and video, researchers discovered the pedagogical obstacles encountered and cultural adaptations necessary for teacher candidates to succeed within an international placement.
