Engineering is becoming a significant part of pre-college learning environments across the nation. The most readily used strategy employed to teach the engineering design process is a problem solving activity in the form of a design challenge. Even though engineering practices have become a prominent focus in STEM education, there is a dearth of research on engineering design challenges in pre-college environments. To this end, a systematic search and review with a highly iterative thematic analysis was used for this literature critique and evaluation. It is anticipated that this paper will contribute toward ongoing discussions about STEM instruction by providing a general picture of salient features that may contribute toward coherence in engineering design challenges.
