"Do-It-Yourself" Scholarship

Mon, April 11, 10:00 to 11:30am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

The proposed paper highlights the possibilities of the “Do It Yourself” social movement to improve the utility of research for social justice. While qualitative methods have the potential to expose bias and be disruptive, methods—in and of themselves—do not guarantee equity or better schooling. The current emphasis on evidence-based policymaking leaves education scholars vulnerable to reproduce social inequities as they emulate positivist knowledge claims. The purpose of the paper is to introduce a mode of inquiry based on the ideologies of DIY skateboarders, graffiti artists, and punk rock musicians. The importance of public scholarship to educate diverse democracies motivates this line of inquiry.
