Impact of Active-Learning Classrooms on Community of Inquiry

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

The traditional image of the general education classroom can be described by many as “masses of students taking fastidious notes as the instructor postulates on theories or formulas” (Crissman Ishler, 2003, p. 72). These traditional lecture-style pedagogy result in instructors conveying knowledge to passive students (Harmin, 2006). This missed-methods research study attempts to measure the impact of implementing an active-learning design on the level of community of inquiry, teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 1999) compared to a traditional lecture classroom for two different general education classes.
